Queen to Be Removed As Head of State Via New Legislation

For years Jamaica has flirted with the idea of removing the Queen as head of state.

A few years ago, former Prime Minister of Jamaica – Portia Simpson Miller vowed to abandon the Queen as head of state and turn the country into a republic.

While speaking at her inauguration, Mrs Simpson Miller stated:

“I love the Queen. She is a beautiful lady, and apart from being a beautiful lady, a wise lady and a wonderful lady.”

Shen then firmly stated in patois: “But I think time come.”

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen on Thursday (April 14) revealed that plans are currently in place to bring legislation this year to replace the Queen with a non-executive president as Jamaica’s head of state.

Queen Elizabeth II, also officially titled Queen of Jamaica has reigned since 6 August 1962.

She currently serves as queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and Head of the Commonwealth.

She is also Queen of 12 countries that have become independent since her accession: Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The Governor General serves as her local representative.
