It’s Wrapped in Music
It’s all in the music. If you want to sell a product wrap it in music.
These days it seems as if nothing can be accomplished in Jamaica unless it has music attached to it. From the bars, to the mall shops everyone is selling something with music. Even our election was wrapped in music.
There are countless shows on television that are promoting music in various forms; whether it Digicel’s Rising Stars, Dancing Dynamites, Magnum’s Kings and Queens of Dancehall, or Tastee’s Talent Trail, and the list goes on. One might assume that if he or she is not into music there is little that can be done to procure a future.
The stage has been set for music and dance entertainment, but what about the other 70% of the population who are neither musically nor rhythmically inclined. Some will argue; what about Wray and Nephew Contender or the latest competitions that are buzzing?
Even so these cater only to the minority. An even greater frustration is for those who would dare enter the pool of entrepreneurship and can’t get funding to carry out their vision when all the financial institution’s requirements demand what they have yet to attain or achieve as a business.
These same institutions would rather sponsor a program that is geared towards singing and dancing to showcase one’s talent but wouldn’t even consider funding your vision because you don’t meet their requirements. It seems to me that if I’m not “shaking ass” or “killing” a riddim lyrically, my chances of becoming financially independent are slim to none. My only other option would be getting a job but the last I heard is that the pool is crowded and there are no lifeguards around.
I believe there is a great room for prioritizing in corporate Jamaica in regards to the future economic growth of the country. When young people are willing and ready to migrate to other countries because they don’t see a future in Jamaica, it has the same effect as abortion on any society, no life to sustain the economy. If the young people don’t remain in the country for development and growth, the future of Jamaica will be in trouble.
Young people are the future of Jamaica. If we want to build Jamaica we have to do so in every area. Jamaica is a country “out of many one people”; this goes beyond skin and heritage. The Jamaican people are multitalented and multifaceted; we excel in every country to which we migrate. I could only imagine what we would do for our country if presented with the same opportunities as abroad. Why send us out to build another man’s country when our economy would benefit greatly? Why send your children to plow another man’s field when your fields are ready for harvesting? Yet you refuse to give the young people the tools to works the fields. It makes no sense!
