Gunmen Attack Firefighters As They Attempt to Put Out Retirement Dump Fire
Firemen attempting to put out a fire at the retirement dump last night received an unpleasant surprise when they were greeted by gunmen who tried to prevent them extinguishing the blaze.
According to the Gleaner, the intervention by the gunmen forced The National Solid Waste and Management Authority to call the police.
Percy Stewart, the Director of Operations at the NSWMA stated that he received word that the firefighters had come under gunfire, the Gleaner also reported.
It is believed the landfill was set on fire by arsonists two days ago and strong winds have made it difficult to put it out.
The attack by armed hoodlums came hours after Jamaica Labour Party supporters demonstrated in the area about the smoke nuisance.
