JFF Boss Wants Usain Bolt to Be Awarded Order of Merit
President of the Jamaica Football Federation Horace Burrell has urged the nation’s government to bestow on Usain Bolt the Order of Merit.
The honour of the Order of Merit (OM) may be conferred upon any citizen of Jamaica or distinguished citizen of a country other than Jamaica (an honorary member) who has achieved eminent international distinction in the field of science, the arts, literature or any other endeavour.
It is not conferred upon more than two persons in any one year.
The motto of the Order is “He that does truth comes into the light”, and a member of the Order is styled “The Honourable”.
According to a report by Loop News, Burrell, while speaking at the launch of the Red Stripe Premier League on Monday, lauded the island’s athletes that participated in the World Championships in Beijing, China.
He also highlighted Usain Bolt who already has the Order of Jamaica, and said he is deserving of the Order of Merit, which is one step up the rankings of the National Awards.
Burrell said, “I want to use this opportunity to make a very strong recommendation to the powers that be, the government, the Governor General to bestow at the appropriate time, the Order of Merit on Usain St. Leo Bolt. He is deserving of it.”
“Usain Bolt has to be one of the greatest Jamaicans that has lived and is living and I believe that this young man deserves all the accolades that can be bestowed upon him at this time,” the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) boss reckoned.
