Wealthier, More Educated People Prefer Reggae – Study
Is reggae one of your favourite musical genres?
According to a study published recently in the Canadian Review of Sociology, your musical preferences say a lot about your social class.
Almost 1,600 telephone interviews with adults in Toronto and Vancouver were conducted in the study.
The persons interviewed were questioned about their musical preferences from 21 musical genres.
The study found that poorer, less educated persons tended to prefer disco, country, easy listening, golden oldies, rap and heavy metal.
Wealthier and more educated persons preferred genres such as reggae, classical, blues, jazz, opera, choral, pop, rock, world and musical theatre.
The least-educated people in the study were over 8 times more likely to dislike classical music compared to the best-educated counterparts.
The study also found that both classes enjoyed the musical genre of “Jazz”.
Gerry Veenstra, the sociologist who conducted the study says – “What upper class people like is disliked by the lower class, and vice versa.
What are your thoughts about this study? Is reggae music really favoured by the “elites”?
