Justin Gatlin Believes He Can Approach Bolt’s 9.58 Record

It was the American Justin Gatlin who once again stole the show at IAAF Diamond League meet in Rome.

Gatlin clocked 9.75 seconds in the 100 meters at the Golden Gala on Thursday narrowly missing his world leading time of 9.74 seconds in the Diamond League opener by 0.01 seconds.

He took one tick off beat Bolt’s meet record of 9.76 set in 2012.

He also claimed he could approach Usain Bolt’s World Record at the world championships in Beijing this August.

Bolt broke the 100m world record with a time of 9.58 seconds in the final of the World Athletics Championship back in 2009.

After finishing several strides ahead of his competition Gatlin stated: “I feel confident running times around 9.70.”

“9.60 should be possible in summer.”

“The key thing to keep winning is to not think about it,” Gatlin said. “I do not think of beating Usain Bolt now because the championship is not tomorrow. We still have some time”, he also stated.
