Jamaican Scientist Offered Over $11 Billion For Cancer Research Patent
It’s not uncommon to hear of Jamaicans doing BIG things both locally and internationally.
Dr. Lawrence Williams, a research consultant with the Scientific Research Council is certainly one Jamaican who has achieved great things and his hard work and dedication certainly make him worthy of recognition and emulation.
Williams obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987, after completing undergraduate studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI) with a major in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry.
He has been studying a compound from the Guinea Hen Weed (scientific name: Petiveria alliacea) for several years which has now reached the patent stage.
So promising is his breakthrough that he has already been offered over $11 billion (US$100 million) for a patent relating to his cancer research.
The offer was however declined because its value is estimated to be greater than what was offered.
Dr. Williams and a Jamaican partner residing in the United States currently hold that patent and reportedly received the impressive offer from a major drug company located in the United States.
While speaking some time ago in an interview with RJR, Dr. Williams stated that the drug he is developing will be effective against a range of cancers. “It works on 12 kinds of cancers so far; two or three types of breast cancer, neuroblastoma, lung, melanoma, adenocarcinoma, prostate etc.”
Isn’t it great to know that Jamaicans are making such significant contributions to the world that one day may improve the quality of life for millions around the globe?
Dr Williams once stated while speaking with the Observer: “I have a passion for research. I love it. It is my lifeline, If I stopped doing it, I don’t know what I would do, I would die.”

Don’t sell it. If the offer came from Big Pharma, keep it. It means they are on the right track . They get their hands on it, they will supress it.

I agree with the posted comments. Most of these big pharmaceutical companies are not interested in curing people, but their financial bottom line. Many patents for cures that could be of public good have not seen the light of day. Get into a partnership with companies that will help you to produce and let the name “Jamaica” live on forever through this breakthrough. Congratulations Dr Williams, and you make us feel a sense of real pride, at a time when others call our names for negative, (sometimes justified) reasons.

Awesome….but is it not going to utilized and/or marketed if the $$$ offer isn’t big enough? It sounds maybe too valuable to sell. Perhaps the patent holders should figure out a way to open their own clinic or treatment center without the FDA/Pharma involvement. I understand very much about selling,but how about sharing Why?,we have no startup funds to propel us in producing the medicine here and now,so i can see a joint venture would be ideal at this point. Just do not have an agreement as we now have with the bauxite agreement where, its a joint but we have no control,or say with the every day running of the plants which is where all the profits go back to the expatriates in the form of so called allowances, and false expenses while the joint partners, real workers go on a shoe string budget if there is anything to budget with. Yes but despite the many comments below,to be commercially successful he will have to come to an arrangement with a big pharmaceutical company to develop,obtain FDA approval,manufacture and market the drug internationally.This does not mean that he should sell but he will need to come to an agreement which gives some cash up front plus royalties during the life of the patent and even beyond.

For several decades I have said that the cure for cancer was given to a little black boy. I just knew it. Thank goodness that this little boy was educated and allow to flourish and use his God given mind.

I am very sorry but whenever I hear of someone being offered grandiose sums of money for a patent of some sort and they refuse the money, I become skeptical. The last “scientist” who made similar claims in Bermuda ended up being a scam artist.
My Dad told me about this Guinea Hen weed about two years ago and How it works in may ways. Ii told my dad that he should take the medicine that the clinic gives him and leave that weed alone. It is so very sad to think that money is more important than human life. I take lots of supplements and vitamins particularly tumeric. Stay away from soy and research your own type of cancer.
