Jamaican Scientist Offered Over $11 Billion For Cancer Research Patent

It’s not uncommon to hear of Jamaicans doing BIG things both locally and internationally.

Dr. Lawrence Williams, a research consultant with the Scientific Research Council is certainly one Jamaican who has achieved great things and his hard work and dedication certainly make him worthy of recognition and emulation.

Williams obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987, after completing undergraduate studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI) with a major in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry.

He has been studying  a compound from the Guinea Hen Weed (scientific name: Petiveria alliacea) for several years which has now reached the patent stage.

So promising is his breakthrough that he has already been offered over $11 billion (US$100 million) for a patent relating to his cancer research.

The offer was however declined because its value is estimated to be greater than what was offered.

Dr. Williams and a Jamaican partner residing in the United States currently hold that patent and reportedly received the impressive offer from a major drug company located in the United States.

While speaking some time ago in an interview with RJR,  Dr. Williams stated that the drug he is developing will be effective against a range of cancers. “It works on 12 kinds of cancers so far; two or three types of breast cancer, neuroblastoma, lung, melanoma, adenocarcinoma, prostate etc.”

Isn’t it great to know that Jamaicans are making such significant contributions to the world that one day may improve the quality of life for millions around the globe?

Dr Williams once stated while speaking with the Observer: “I have a passion for research. I love it. It is my lifeline, If I stopped doing it, I don’t know what I would do, I would die.”

Don’t sell it. If the offer came from Big Pharma, keep it. It means they are on the right track . They get their hands on it, they will supress it.

I agree with the posted comments. Most of these big pharmaceutical companies are not interested in curing people, but their financial bottom line. Many patents for cures that could be of public good have not seen the light of day. Get into a partnership with companies that will help you to produce and let the name “Jamaica” live on forever through this breakthrough. Congratulations Dr Williams, and you make us feel a sense of real pride, at a time when others call our names for negative, (sometimes justified) reasons.

Don’t sell it. They don’t want a cure for cancer. The sicker people are the more money they make.

The possibilities andre endless, just don’t sell it please let’s keep something that is jamaica, everything else we sell out to foreigners.

Please don’t let the greed of the US $ get to you…Keep doing what you doing, the pharmaceutical companies don’t want a cure for cancer…I have seen too many dying . If Cuba can find a cure for Cancer and their rates are down with this disease why can’t the USA….

Smart man! So many American Corporations will rob anyone blind. Since they ship out their own countrymans jobs overseas (not satisfied with a 200% net profit) what more can a non- American expect.?

Why on God’s earth…heavens on the earth) would you be tempted to sell your Patent, Dr. Lawrence Williams? Past scientists such as Nicola Tesla ceded their inventions to the likes of Alexander Bell/Bell Laboratories and actually died a pauper: You must at all times own your aforesaid Patents, but after enjoying your Private Practice in Jamaica you may venture to work with reputable Global companies in Japan by Licensing your Products (Never relinquish nor sell your Patents outright) to be manufactured and distributed Globaly…with an accompanying solid Marketing scheme. May God bless, protect you and your effort for helping humanity.… Read more »

Absolutely amazing achievement. As long as it saves lives and doesn’t go in the hands of these money grabbing pharmaceutical companies. The same origin where the research was done, would not benefit your people du to the price it will go on the shelf for.

No he should not sell! It’s worth a whole lot more anyway…I agree with other comments, society is not interested to cure people….that don’t make money or control the population. That is something our country must hold on to an let those visit ja to be cured

DON’T SELL. DON’T GIVE AWAY YOUR CREDIT. Big Pharma are only interested in MONEY. Cancer is a money making business and that is why biig Pharma and government rather keep you hopping along (keep putting a band aid on a major sore so-to-speak) with the hope that you don’t die to fast so that money can keep coming in.

Awesome. The “Sickcare” Industry is brutal and nasty, the fact they want to pay so much for it means they know it’s worth. Develop it and get it out to the public and masses. Do good and hit them where it hurts. It will help many and you’ll make way more than 11 Billion

This is really exciting news. Congrats Dr. Williams. We thank you. Hold on to your patent and create more great things for Jamaica and Jamaicans. A cure for breast cancer and other cancers is really amazing, and so are the business possibilities and opportunities you can create for Jamaica and the world. This is a gift to humanity. Please do not give it away to the big International Drug Companies.

He’ll be mad to sell to them, everything we have they want and will do anything to get it; so beware!

Our country will not be any better off for it, it’s only a bribe to get their hands in our ‘Lignum Vittae plant, like Bauxite what next?

Phyllis Thompson Rennie

The is awesome news! You make us very proud! Don’t take their offer because they will make triple, and your hard work will be lost, and others will be reconized for your hard work.. Bravo sir!

Well done Dr Williams and thank you demonstrating to the world that Jamaicans are intelligent and creative in all aspects of life. Secondly thank you, for not selling out to the Americans for a fraction of its worth, and they would just suppress the research. How about investing some of the revenue to develop scientific education and research in Jamaica’s schools, colleges and universities and produce a generation of leading scientists in 10-20 years. Jamaica has a lot of natural produce which is good for fighting cancer, so it makes sense to develop an industry to advance the nations wealth.

ALL THESE COMMENTORS ARE RIGHT. THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY DON’T WANT TO CURE CANCER. IF YOU SELL THEM THE PATENT, YOU’LL NEVER SEE IT ON THE MARKET. OPEN A CANCEL TREATMENT CENTER IN JAMAICA AND BOTH YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND ALL OF JAMAICA WILL EVENTUALLY BENEFIT FROM THIS BLESSING FROM THE MOST HIGH GOD “YAHWEH”

Awesome….but is it not going to utilized and/or marketed if the $$$ offer isn’t big enough? It sounds maybe too valuable to sell. Perhaps the patent holders should figure out a way to open their own clinic or treatment center without the FDA/Pharma involvement. Charge what they must for the treatments and also treat the destitute for little or no $$. I know, I’m an idealist. I’m o.k. with that. I very much hope that $$$ isn’t the bottom line.

Mario Dunbar

Gentle folks this patent drug is not a cure it is just another treatment beside there are other cancer treatments that are way effective than this . The reason why drug companies need this potent drug is because of its cost and its compound can be modified , either to ameliorate or subside the drug efficacy or to create another drug of similar potential. Great job still Dr Lawrence.

I understand very much about selling, but how about sharing Why?,we have no startup funds to propel us in producing the medicine here and now,so i can see a joint venture would be ideal at this point. Just do not have an agreement as we now have with the bauxite agreement where, its a joint but we have no control,or say with the every day running of the plants which is where all the profits go back to the expatriates in the form of so called allowances, and false expenses while the joint partners, real workers go on a shoe string… Read more »

To me this is ongoing affirmation of the fact that we are among the world’s best and brightest ….. Please note: he never studied overseas/abroad to get where he is now …. another thing local employers seem to be taken by …. This is another reason why we need to abandon the old political regimes that are piloted by men who no longer have much to offer in the way of a more efficient fair transparent positive modular and progressive way of government administration…. they unlike this man are still very much into “sell out” as against staying the course… Read more »
