5% Wage Increase for Teachers Rejected by the JTA Following 5 Year Wage Freeze
A five per cent wage increase from the government has been rejected by The Jamaica Teacher’s Association, JTA.
The JTA is also threatening disruption in the new term if the offer is not increased.
President of the JTA, Doran Dixon, said the offer was discussed over the weekend by the Association’s General Council and it deemed the offer as unacceptable.
Mr. Dixon says the offer was rejected out of hand by the members and suggested that if a better offer isn’t made in the week then a smooth start for the term after the holidays cannot be guaranteed.
Mr. Dixon said the JTA previously indicated to the Finance Ministry that a five percent offer would not be accepted.

I am not a teacher but I must say they put up with a lot and for them to only be offered a 5% increase after 5 yrs freeze is unacceptable.
scandalous
It’s down right disrespect after five years. They have no regards for teachers.

Furthermore, wage negotiations are for a two year period; hence, the least to be offered is 10% (not considering the lost years.) Finally, in the school community teahers substitute for nurses, police, judge, parents etc. It however sad that society believes that the teacher should live in poverty. I understand what five percent is and I also… Read more »
Even if the government offers more it won’t be much more trust me. The JTA will eventually accept an offer-not too long from
now. All of this is just a facade to suggest they are fighting for the teachers.

Many of you are self centered people. Teachers want 25%. The Police is also rejecting the 5%. Nurses shall come as well. The Soldiers shall come as well. The Clerical and Administration shall come as well. The doctors shall be coming as well both Juniors and Senior Doctors. Teachers are acting as if they are the ONLY STAFF on the Public Service Pay Bill. What the Government should do is start cutting the Staff bill, start reducing Employees. I grow to know little is better than having nothing. That I should live within my budget. When Government start to cut… Read more »
Five percent is even been given by Private Organisation. Most hardworkers get the five percent at these Private Companies. So when persons going to look at 5% is because they don’t understand it. Jamaica still doesn’t reach where it need to give the Civil Servants they seek. I hope these people and their Unions don’t go missing up the Good that have started. Teachers have benefits than ANY OTHER Civil Servants. Their ALLOWANCES are huge. Hugs
