Jamaica’s Usain Bolt’s top speed is only 7km/h faster than midfielder Arjen Robben!
Dutch midfielder Arjen Robben is the fastest ever recorded player in full flight on a football field according to new data which showed the Bayern Munich ace recording a peak speed of 37 kilometres per hour during the Group A encounter between Spain and the Netherlands last Friday.
Robben looked as if he was embarrassing Sergio Ramos when beating the hapless Spaniard in a straight foot race as Holland humiliated the world champions.
The Real Madrid defender was left trailing in his wake as Robben stormed through; it appeared Ramos was leggy, only for FIFA statistics to later reveal that the 37km per hour sprint was the fastest ever recorded by a footballer.
According to the data, Robben’s peak speed is just 7 kilometres per hour slower than Jamaican double-sprint world record holder Usain Bolt who has the highest recorded top speed for a human.
In achieving the feat, Robben surpassed the previous record of 35.7 km/h held by Arsenal winger Theo Walcott.
Manchester United’s Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia (32.5 km/h), Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale (34.7 km/h) and Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon who has a top-speed of 33.8 km/h, close out the top 5.
Reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo (33.6 km/h), Lionel Messi (32.5 km/h) and Wayne Rooney (32.1 km/h), round out the top 8.
