Jamaica’s Axeman Strikes Again!
Undefeated Jamaican WBA Featherweight champion Nicholas Walters scored his third consecutive stoppage win, doing so at 1:57 of the fourth round over Mexican rival Alberto Garza as part of Saturday night’s Top Rank card in Corpus Christi, Texas.
A 27-year-old who is nicknamed “The Axe Man,” Walters improved to 23-0 with his 19th knockout victory, and Garza fell to 25-6-1 with 20 knockouts.
Walters’ next opponent could be the 2012 fighter of the year, Nonito Donaire who has won titles in three divisions and an interim belt in a fourth.
Donaire, the former RING junior featherweight champion who was making his 126-pound debut, registered a stunning 9th round knockout win over his nemesis Vic Darchinyan.
In another bout, Mexican featherweight Oscar Valdez, who turns 23 next month, rose to 7-0 with as many knockouts following his fifth-round stoppage of Jesus Lule Raya (6-6, 1 KO).
The bouts took place on the undercard of an HBO-televised triple header which also featured RING featherweight champion Mikey Garcia challenging WBO junior lightweight beltholder Roman “Rocky” Martinez, and junior middleweights Vanes Martirosyan and Demetrius Andrade in clash of unbeatens for the WBO’s vacant belt.
