The Foreign Affairs Minister Senator A. J. Nicholson says Saturn has decided to withdraw the ad.
He stated the decision was taken to remove the advertisement from all its online channels, and website and to forego airing the ad on German TV, following quiet diplomacy with Jamaica’s foreign affairs ministry, the ministry of foreign affairs of Germany and Saturn.
Senator Nicholson adds that in a letter to the ambassador of Jamaica in Berlin, Saturn indicated that at no time was it the company’s intention to offend the national sentiment of the Jamaican people.
The letter further stated, that it must be noted, that humorous approach selected by the company has led to some misunderstandings in Jamaica and among Jamaicans living in Germany.
The company says it sincerely regrets this misunderstanding and would like to apologize for having angered or offended anyone with the ad.
The letter stated further that the ad was meant to be “tongue-in-cheek” and was not intended to “offend the sensibilities of a segment of the population or nation or diminish the significance of the Jamaican flag”.
The government says it accepts the apology of Saturn and is pleased at its decision to withdraw the advertisement.
