5 Insanely Good Reasons Why You Should Be Eating Guineps

Its scientific name is Melicoccus bijugatus,  but it is commonly referred to as guinep in Jamaica and surprisingly, it’s even called “Ackee” in Barbados and some other Caribbean islands.

Guinep season is in full swing here and there are many good reasons why you should be consuming this fruit.

The small, fruit has fairly tough skin but contains a delicious flesh that has a jelly like consistency.

1. Guineps contain Vitamins A and C which help to boost the immune system and prevent the formation of urinary stones. They also contain calcium and phosphorus. Calcium keeps your teeth and bones strong and helps prevent cancer. Phosphorus aids digestion and regulating hormones.

2. Guineps have special proteins that help to lower blood sugar levels and as a result, studies are being done on the fruit as anti-diabetic food.

3. Guineps lower blood pressure and help control asthma. They also contain loads of antioxidants (Phenolic Compounds) which help to prevent cardiovascular disease, and prevent strokes.

4. Guineps help you sleep better! They contaia large amount of the amino acid tryptophan which is important for good sleep… and lysine which is important for proper growth and for preventing herpes.

5.Guineps are low in fat, calories, and are cholesterol free! As a matter of fact, some people even say if you want to lose weight just eat Guineps all day long… it will keep you busy.

Bonus: The leaves from the Guinep tree can be boiled and made into a tea which is great for intestinal problems.

Please Note: Guineps contain toxins when they are not ripe, and because of the large seeds they are a potential choking hazard for children.
