Together We Can Turn Around Jamaica

The period 2010 – 2014 was a notable one for Jamaica.

Not because of our elite athletes or our talented musicians, but simply because those years saw the country’s crime rate falling drastically.

Murders went on a downward trend ever since the controversial operation in Tivoli Gardens, of which there is currently a commission of enquiry, and other major crimes also followed the downward trend.

However, 2015 has not started on a positive note. For the month of January alone, almost 100 Jamaicans were murdered across the island.

It is impossible to fathom the grief of the families who have lost a relative due to violent crimes. The pain that is embedded in their hearts and the psychological effects are great.

As a nation, we need to step back and really analyse the nation’s problem: poverty, crime, corruption, illiteracy, and the lack of responsibility.

These are not attributes that make one great, these are side effects of a nation that has lost its way.

Our brothers are being devoured by the struggles of life. Our leaders have led us down a dark hole from which climbing out has got more difficult, and the problems of the people are unresolved.

What really worries me is that there is no solution in sight for our nation’s ills.

However, until the source of the problem is properly dealt with, I suggest we examine ourselves to understand and come to the point where we care for others as we do ourselves.

History has shown us that only when a people work together can greatness be achieved.
