Jamaican Sprinter Lavanya Williams Set for Diamond League Debut

Jamaica’s sprint relay success in Botswana earlier this month featured Lavanya Williams on third leg duties before the baton reached Elaine Thompson-Herah on anchor, as the team secured gold in the women’s 4×100 metres in 42.00 seconds at the World Athletics Relays.

The 21-year-old sprinter is now preparing for another major step in her career after being named to compete at Sunday’s Diamond League meeting in Rabat, where she is set to make her debut on the elite circuit alongside fellow Jamaican Brianna Lyston.

Also listed among the competitors for the women’s 100 metres are World Championship silver medallist Tina Clayton and Jamaican sprinter Jonielle Smith, with Lyston having already been confirmed for the meet last week.

Williams has produced a series of fast performances during the outdoor season while representing Dynamic Speed Athletic Club.

At Velocity Fest on April 19, she twice improved her personal best over 100 metres, first clocking 11.04 seconds in the semi-finals before lowering it further to 10.96 in the final.

Earlier in the campaign, the former Ruseas and William Knibb High athlete captured victory in the 100 metres at the Miramar Invitational in Florida, posting a wind-assisted 10.99 seconds.

Lyston is also expected to be making her first appearance on the Diamond League stage in Rabat as Jamaica continues to showcase emerging sprint talent on the international circuit.
