Over 900 Container Homes Arrive in Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa

The arrival of more than 900 modular container homes in Jamaica was highlighted in the Senate as discussions continued on the proposed National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) legislation.

State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, said the units had already reached the island as part of the Government’s housing response following Hurricane Melissa.

The update came during his contribution to the debate on the NaRRA Bill in the Upper House, where concerns had been raised about the level of attention given to housing within the proposed legislation.

Opposition Senator Floyd Morris, who has responsibility for housing and sustainable development matters in the Opposition, had requested additional information regarding the modular housing programme.

During the exchange, Senator Fitz-Henley argued that the Bill’s intent was not weakened by the absence of a separate purpose clause within the legislation.

He also indicated that Prime Minister Andrew Holness had previously brought together several agencies, among them the National Housing Trust, while discussions were being held on the housing response.

According to Senator Fitz-Henley, the Government had secured thousands of houses as part of the broader effort tied to post-hurricane recovery measures.

The modular container homes were procured to assist in addressing housing challenges that emerged after Hurricane Melissa.
