JUTC’s Student Card Brings Added Security to Rural Transport
A new student transportation card featuring a built-in security alert system is being developed by the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) for use on rural school buses.
The initiative was announced by Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, during a post-Cabinet media briefing held on Wednesday at Jamaica House.
Parents are being encouraged to accompany their children to register for the new card.
Once activated, the card will allow students to swipe when boarding or exiting the bus, automatically sending notifications to their parents each time this occurs.
The feature is designed to enhance safety and provide real-time updates on students’ travel activity.
Launched on September 8, the National Rural School Bus Programme has already deployed around 60 buses across the island.
The Education Minister expressed satisfaction with the early results, noting that the service has been well received by students and schools.
Free rides will remain available for students until the end of October, after which a subsidised fee of $50 per trip will take effect.
