Jamaica’s Oblique Seville Targets Another Win Over Olympic Champion Lyles

Track fans will get another showdown today as Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, twice a World Championship finalist, lines up against Olympic champion Noah Lyles in the men’s 100 metres at the 13th leg of the Wanda Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Confidence is high for Seville, who already toppled Lyles this season when he posted 9.86 seconds to the American’s 10.00 at the London meet.

The Jamaican sprinter, now 23 years old, has also enjoyed the upper hand in their rivalry, holding a 2–1 advantage after victories in Kingston last year and London this season, though Lyles had the last word at the Paris Olympics where Seville finished eighth.

Absent from today’s contest will be Kishane Thompson, the Olympic silver medallist and world leader, who pulled out with a shin problem.

Akeem Blake of Jamaica, Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain, American sprinter Courtney Lindsey, and South Africa’s Akani Simbine—who tops the Diamond League standings—are among those filling out the field.

On the women’s programme, Jamaica will be represented in the sprint hurdles by national record holder Ackera Nugent along with national champion Megan Tapper.

The pair will be up against an elite lineup including American Masai Russell, the 2024 world leader, Nigeria’s world record holder Tobi Amusan, Alaysha Johnson of the United States, and Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser.

In the field events, Carey McLeod and former world champion Tajay Gayle will test themselves in the men’s long jump against Olympic silver medallist Wayne Pinnock.

Shot put action will also feature Rajindra Campbell, the Turkish thrower who previously competed for Jamaica.
