Oblique Seville Defeats Lyles to Win 100m at London Diamond League
Jamaica’s Oblique Seville delivered a major surprise at the 2025 London Diamond League on Saturday by storming to victory in the men’s 100 metres.
Crossing the finish line in 9.86 seconds, Seville surged ahead of a world-class line-up, which featured Olympic titleholders and elite sprinters alike.
Among those left trailing were Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles, Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo, and South Africa’s seasoned competitor Akani Simbine.
Lyles, making his first 100m appearance since claiming gold in Paris 2024, could only manage 10.00 seconds to secure second place.
Billed as a showdown between the kings of the short sprints, the race rekindled the fierce rivalry between Lyles and Tebogo, who have traded victories throughout the season.
At the previous Monaco Diamond League, Lyles had edged Tebogo in the 200m — but London brought a different result.
From the gun, Seville exploded into the lead, outpacing the field with a flawless start at the historic London Stadium.
The Jamaican even had time to acknowledge his dominance, raising a celebratory finger in the closing metres before crossing the line.
Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain secured third place with a time of 10.02 seconds, narrowly ahead of fellow Jamaican Ackeem Blake, who clocked 10.08.
Reflecting on his performance, Seville told the Diamond League website that executing his training perfectly and winning in London meant a great deal to him.
He also noted the confidence boost the victory provides as he prepares for the upcoming World Championships.
Behind the podium finishers, Simbine and Jeremiah Azu both finished in 10.11, while Tebogo registered 10.12 and Louie Hinchliffe posted 10.21.
On a day filled with Olympic-calibre talent, Seville stood alone as the only athlete to dip under 10 seconds.
