Canada Issues Updated Travel Advisory for Jamaica

Canada has issued an updated travel advisory for Jamaica, urging Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting the island.

This move follows a similar Level 3 advisory issued by the United States, which cited worries about inadequate medical services and escalating crime rates in Jamaica, while advising its citizens to reconsider travel plans to the Caribbean nation.

Canada’s advisory emphasises that despite the presence of law enforcement, violent crime remains a significant problem, particularly in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay.

The widespread availability of firearms contributes to the gravity of the situation, with most violent drug and gang-related crimes involving the use of firearms.

Tourists are cautioned about the risk of becoming victims of crossfire and crimes of opportunity, such as robberies.

The advisory specifies certain communities, including Arnette Gardens, August Town, Denham Town, Hunts Bay, Mountain View, Flankers, Mount Salem, and May Pen, as areas to avoid due to higher crime rates.

In addition to addressing security concerns, the advisory offers a warning to Canadian travellers of diverse sexual orientations.

It recommends refraining from engaging in public displays of affection to mitigate the risk of harassment or abuse.

In addition, the advisory points out other potential risks for Canadian visitors, such as credit and automated teller machine fraud, along with romance and lottery scams.
