In a rare and extraordinary event, 70-year-old Safina Namukwaya of Uganda has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, following fertility treatment at the Women’s Hospital International Facility Center in Kampala.

While not unprecedented, this occurrence is a testament to the evolving landscape of reproductive medicine.

The momentous delivery occurred on Wednesday through a cesarean section, with both the newborns and the mother reported to be in good health.

Arthur Matsiko, the spokesperson for the hospital, confirmed that Namukwaya is progressing well in her recovery and engaging in regular activities.

Having previously undergone in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at the same facility, Namukwaya gave birth to a daughter in 2020. The Women’s Hospital International Facility Center, recognised for its expertise in assisting couples facing fertility challenges, continues to play a pivotal role in advancing reproductive healthcare in the East African region.

The hospital’s proprietor, a prominent gynecologist, highlighted the rarity of Namukwaya’s case, emphasising that she is now the oldest woman to have successfully delivered a baby at their facility.

While not historic, the accomplishment underscores the strides made in fertility treatments, showcasing the potential for individuals to overcome age-related obstacles in their quest for parenthood.

This event echoes a similar case reported in 2019, where a 73-year-old woman in southern India gave birth to twin girls following IVF treatment.
