Jamaica Under Hurricane Warning – Tropical Storm Conditions Expected
The Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency management (ODPEM) is advising the public that the Meteorological Service (Met) of Jamaica has reported that a HURRICANE WARNING is now in effect for the island.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to affect Jamaica, while hurricane conditions also pose a possible threat to the island in 36 hours or less.
The ODPEM has alerted all Agencies and Parish Disaster Committees. Emergency Managers, responders and volunteers are also placed on standby.
The Parish Shelter Mechanism as well as all Parish Emergency Operation Centers have been activated. Essential staff is carrying out final emergency preparations.
Shelters are also now activated in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols and prevention measures.
Small craft operators, including fishers from cays and banks are reminded to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and wind sea conditions return to normal.
The Public is being asked to continue to monitoring the radio for further advisories and to avoid areas that are at risk from flooding, storm surges and landslides.
Also take the following precautions in the event of heavy rains:
Be ready to evacuate if you live in low-lying or flood prone areas especially for the eastern & northeastern sections of the island.
Decide on likely evacuation routes.
Avoid flooded waterways, i.e. Fordings, gullies, streams, rivers, either on foot or in vehicles.
Ensure that all important documents are secured in plastic bags or waterproof containers.
Turn off all electrical power, gas and water supplies in areas that are in immediate danger for flooding.
