Close to 2,000 Girls Get HPV Vaccine – Health Ministry
Nearly 2,000 girls have received the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine since the start of the programme in secondary schools across Jamaica according to the Ministry of Health.
4,393 girls were targeted during the programme’s first three weeks and 1,995 have been vaccinated according to a report prepared by the Ministry’s Family Health Unit.
416 have declined to be vaccinated.
The ministry will be aiming to work with parents to identify reasons for refusals and new dates will be set with the schools to immunize the remaining girls.
According to the Health Ministry, all sessions so far have been incident free and there has been no report of adverse reactions to the vaccine.
The Government is spending $100 million to administer the HPV vaccine in schools.
The programme started on October 2 and targets approximately 20,000 high school girls.
