Prime Minister Holness – Please Deal With The Crime
Crime is in every nook and cranny of the island and I have become fearful having just arrived from the American South.
The Prime Minister and his Security Minister have no solutions while criminals daily maim, take lives and drive fear into communities. They are in their ivory towers while ‘Jah Jah kingdom’ goes to waste.
In yesteryears, crime, more specifically murders predominantly occurred in urban areas like Kingston and Montego Bay. Now it’s an all island thiing. From Montego Bay to Greenwich Town to Windward Road to Mountain View to Clarksonville, St, Ann to Hanover – the murders are daily and every community is affected.
We would laugh at Hanover a few years ago because it was a ‘forgotten parish’, except for Ruseas High. That status has changed because in the last two years Hanover has seemingly become the rural murder capital.
In the States a few weeks ago and I am talking about the deep south, Jamaica’s name is referred to with the crime vocabulary. Whether talking with a Palestinian American, a Jewish American, an Italian American , an Afro Southern American, a Greek American, a Polish American or A wasp the questionis the same- “Why is so much crime in Jamaica?”
Nothing is hidden to the American public or the international reading audience as our country’s name is tainted with crime. Jamaica’s name is in the gutters and no one cares because crime pays.
The security companies benefit, the political cronies benefit from their association with politicians contributing kickbacks and the corrupt police make big bucks via the crime wave from proceeds from criminal activities and enterprises.
It seems the Prime Minister and the security leadership are not aware of our image abroad. It is not good and is bad for investment. No one wants to invest his/her money in a country where he can be pounced upon even at a bus terminal or in broad daylight. The Prime Minister does not seem to understand how foreigners view crime. They view it as threatening, ugly and intimidating. It is a miracle our tourism product is holding up, but this is not due to marketing efforts by the government, but rather the love and I mean deep love by some foreigners for our country and culture.
Then some academics and theorists will concur that the government and politicians do not want crime solve or reduced.!!! Why, crime keeps the country’s marginalised, ignorant and at the mercy of politicians. They like the masses to beg and big them up. They desire the quasi- plantocracy to continue.
After all people in this country with power and ‘colour’ want the island to remain “classist”. We fail to realise that this is the only Caribbean country in which middle class literally wear their class on their lapels. Some people want the marginalised folks to continue to live in a mess and despondency as they rise on their backs – the old house slave mentality.
They do not give respect or show courtesy to others. Go to New Orleans and see how courteous people are to each other even if they belong to the Klu Klux Klan. Sadly in Jamaica it is about class, status and subjugation of others and the politician and government seemingly support this crap.
I foresee the current crime situation turning for the worse in the next few months and will prove to be almost impossible to control. It will spiral out of control and it is this reason why I am pleading to the Prime Minister to deal with it now!!! Act now before Jamaica sinks into mayhem. Criminals now believe they are invincible especially since no one pays the price at the gallows for taking lives.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, please hear the cries of those affected. Please deal with the crime now. Decent law abiding folks cannot take it anymore.
Yours truly,
Maurice Christie
