African Americans Unfairly targeted in Marijuana Arrests
Approximately four times as many African Americans are arrested in The United States compared to their white counterparts for marijuana related offences despite the usage of the drug being the same for both groups. A federal government backed study highlighted that in states like Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois this racially biased figure jumps to eight percent.
Americans are more open to marijuana use with the drug already legalized in 13 states and allowed for medicinal purposes in 18. Marijuana still remains illegal under federal law.
Mona Lynch, professor of criminology, law and society at the University of California said, “It’s pretty clear that law enforcement practices are not keeping pace with public opinion and state policies.” There are federal funding schemes that give millions of dollars to police departments for meeting numerical arrest goals which include racial profiling, but it is also costing $831million more than 10 years to enforce these marijuana laws.
