Bolt receives another Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award
Jamaican sprint phenom Usain Bolt has added another trophy to his already bulging cabinet.
Bolt, the world’s fastest man, was on Monday acclaimed the Laureus World Sportsman of The Year after his remarkable performance at the 2012 Olympics where he repeated his success in Beijing by winning gold medals in all three sprint events in London, 100m, 200m and 4×100 metres relay events respectively.
The 26 year old who previously won the award in 2009 and 2010, beat out the likes of Barcelona’s Argentine midfielder Lionel Messi, American swimming sensation Michael Phelps, Formula One triple world champion Sebastian Vettel and Vritain’s Mo Farah and Bradley Wiggins.
While not there in person at Rio de Janeiro’s Theatro Municipal, Bolt appeared via a hologram wearing a suit and tie and promised to defend his Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games.
The Laureus World Sportswoman of The Year Award in the meantime was won by British heptathlete Jessica Ennis.
Another Briton, Andy Murray, scooped the Breakthrough of The Year Award after winning his first grand slam at the U.S Open as well as Olympic gold and silver medals in London.
The Team of The Year Award went to Europe’s Ryder Cup team while Dominican Republic’s Felix Sanchez received the Comeback of The Year Award after winning the Olympic 400 meters hurdles gold medal in London, eight years after winning it for the first time in Athens.
There were two additional awards: the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented to Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the newly created Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award which was won by Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time.
