First Group of Third Country Nationals Arrives in Jamaica

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith says the United States has not authorised the public release of its agreement with Jamaica concerning the transfer of Third Country Nationals (TCNs).
Johnson Smith explained that although Washington has permitted similar agreements with other countries to be published, it has not granted Jamaica the same approval.
She maintained that the decision was not due to anything prejudicial.
The minister also defended the Government’s handling of the arrangement, saying efforts were made during negotiations to safeguard Jamaicans and ensure compliance with domestic and international laws governing safe and orderly migration.
Meanwhile, Opposition Spokesman on National Security Fitz Jackson has criticised the Government’s announcement of the arrangement, calling for the immediate and full disclosure of its terms.
The controversy comes as Jamaica has received its first group of TCNs under the arrangement with the United States.
A Government source confirmed that 22 individuals have entered the island as part of the initial batch.
Their arrival follows an announcement made the previous day by the Ministries of National Security and Foreign Affairs, which indicated that the first group was expected in Jamaica shortly.
