Government Starts Assessment of JPS Findings into June 5 Blackout

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz

The Government says Jamaicans will be updated as the review of reports into the June 5 islandwide blackout progresses, with any decisions or recommendations to be communicated in a timely and transparent manner.

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz said the review process is aimed at protecting the public interest, reinforcing accountability and ensuring that lessons emerging from the investigation contribute to improving the reliability and resilience of Jamaica’s electricity system.

A detailed technical assessment of the reports has now begun. The Ministry of Energy said the exercise is being carried out in collaboration with the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), along with any other relevant agencies where necessary.

The OUR has also received the same reports as part of its own regulatory assessment, according to the Ministry.

The documents were submitted by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) within the Government’s required 30-day deadline following the nationwide power outage on June 5. Mr. Vaz welcomed the utility’s timely compliance with that directive.

The June 5 blackout left customers across the island without electricity for several hours, prompting the Government to require JPS to investigate the incident and submit its findings within the prescribed timeframe.
