Jamaica Hit By Island-Wide Blackout

Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has reported that a system failure was responsible for the island-wide power outage that affected the country on Friday.

According to Energy Minister Daryl Vaz, efforts were immediately launched to restore electricity, with power already returning to some communities as recovery operations got underway.

Vaz indicated that all power generation facilities were in the process of being restarted as authorities worked through the restoration exercise.

He also stated that electricity service was expected to return across the island overnight.

The disruption triggered a response from both government officials and the national electricity provider, with JPS confirming that investigations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the failure.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Vaz shared a statement from the utility company addressing the incident and outlining the ongoing assessment of the outage.

Vaz later signalled that a comprehensive probe would be conducted into what he described as an unacceptable interruption in service by the utility provider.

The outage affected the entire island, with the energy minister announcing on social media that Jamaica had experienced a nationwide blackout.
