JLP Promises Gradual Minimum Wage Hike to $32,000
Prime Minster Andrew Holness has revealed that the national minimum wage will be gradually increased to $32,000 for a 40-hour work week over the coming years if his party continues in government.
At present, Jamaican workers on the minimum wage receive $16,000 for the same weekly hours.
The JLP’s plan begins with a proposed adjustment to $18,500 in its first budget should the party return to office after Wednesday’s elections.
Each national budget cycle in Jamaica begins on April 1 once it gains parliamentary approval.
Holness explained that steady increases are intended to make formal employment more attractive and encourage more citizens to join the active labour force.
The strategy, according to him, is designed to open up greater avenues for economic expansion.
Over the past nine years, his administration has focused on shaping what he described as a carefully balanced economic framework.
Avoiding abrupt policy shifts has been key, and Holness emphasised that decisions have been timed and planned to maintain stability without the need for new taxes.
