Murders Fall by 43% Across Jamaica Up to August 23

A total of 436 people were murdered in Jamaica as of Saturday, August 23.

Markedly, this figure reflects a steep 43 per cent decline compared to the same period last year.

Statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force show that the country has recorded 329 fewer murders than the 765 documented during the corresponding stretch in 2023.

This means that nearly half as many murders have been reported this year compared to last year’s count.

St. Andrew South registered the highest number of killings, with the division tallying 52 lives lost.

The second-highest totals were observed in St. Catherine South and St. Ann, where both divisions reported 38 murders each.

Together, those three divisions accounted for more than a quarter of all the killings recorded islandwide so far.

Portland, however, had the lowest figure, with only 8 murders reported.

Trelawny followed closely, with its murder count standing at 9.

Combined, Portland and Trelawny accounted for fewer than 20 murders between them.

Encouragingly, cases of rape have also dropped, with 69 fewer incidents compared to last year.

This decline in rape cases adds to the downward trend seen in murders.

Robberies, on the other hand, climbed by 46 cases across the island.

The increase in robberies indicates that property crimes remain a challenge despite improvements in violent crime.

Break-ins showed an even sharper increase, rising by 159 incidents during the review period.
