Smith Leads the Way in Luzern with Strong Jamaican Showings

Jamaica’s Jonielle Smith delivered a standout performance on Tuesday, capturing the nation’s only win at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet in Luzern, Switzerland.
Competing in the women’s 100 metres, Smith surged to the finish in 11.12 seconds, fending off Italy’s Zaynab Dosso, who crossed the line in 11.24 seconds.
Her triumph follows a fifth-place result at the National Championship in June, which earned her a spot in Jamaica’s 4x100m relay squad for the upcoming World Athletics Championships.
Also on the track, Kerrica Hill turned heads in the women’s 100m hurdles by recording a personal best of 12.54 seconds, placing second behind home favourite Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland, who won in 12.49 seconds.
Hansle Parchment, the 2016 Olympic gold medallist, produced a season’s best 13.26 seconds in the men’s 110m hurdles to claim third place.
Victory in that event went to American Trey Cunningham, who clocked 13.22 seconds to lead the field.
In the men’s 200 metres, Christopher Taylor secured a third-place finish in 20.49 seconds, missing the 20.16 seconds needed for World Championships qualification.
Natoya Goule-Toppin continued her steady campaign with a time of 1:59.80 in the women’s 800 metres, placing third overall.
Rusheen McDonald, Jamaica’s national 400m champion, finished second in 45.30 seconds, narrowly missing the 44.85-second qualifying standard.
The men’s quarter-mile race was claimed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards, who clocked 45.11 seconds to take the win.
