Jamaica’s Men’s 4×100m Relay Team Clinches Tokyo Spot with Season Best

On Saturday  Jamaica’s men’s 4×100 metre relay team produced a season-best time of 37.80 seconds to claim victory and secure qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Leading the charge were Rohan Watson, Oblique Seville, Kadrian Goldson, and Olympic silver medalist Kishane Thompson, whose combined effort edged out Great Britain’s 38.08-second season-best finish.

With this performance, the Jamaican men leapfrogged into the 15th qualifying spot, pushing Nigeria out of the top 16 required for entry into the Tokyo championships.

Meanwhile, the Jamaican women’s 4×100 metre squad, already assured of their Tokyo berth, clocked 42.50 seconds to place second in their race. A blistering 41.69-second performance by Great Britain, the fastest time in the world this year, earned them the win.

  

Elsewhere on the track, Ashanti Moore crossed the line in seventh place in the women’s 200 metres, registering a time of 22.86 seconds. That event was dominated by Olympic champion Julien Alfred, who smashed the meet and national records with a world-leading 21.71 seconds.

Delivering a podium finish in the women’s 400-metre hurdles, Andrenette Knight took third in 53.79 seconds. Jeneive Russell, her Jamaican teammate, had a disappointing outing and finished eighth in 1:00.55. Dutch star Femke Bol took the top spot with a world-leading 52.10 seconds.

In the women’s 800 metres, Natoya Goule-Toppin, the Commonwealth silver medalist, recorded a time of 1:59.27 to finish eighth.

In field action, long jumper Wayne Pinnock landed gold with a leap of 8.29 metres, while fellow Jamaican Carey McLeod captured third place after jumping 8.10 metres.

Smashing the Diamond League record in the men’s discus, Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania launched the implement 71.70 metres, breaking the previous mark of 71.27 metres set in 2022. Jamaica’s Roje Stona, the reigning Olympic champion, secured fifth with a best throw of 64.71 metres.

Facing challenges in the women’s high jump, Lamara Distin tied for seventh with American Charity Hufnagel, as both athletes cleared 1.85 metres.
