Murders Down 37.7% — Golding Joins Call for Body Cameras
Jamaica has seen a 37.7% drop in murders compared to the same period last year, according to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF)—a development that has been widely welcomed.
Opposition Leader and People’s National Party (PNP) President, Mark Golding, has commended the police for their role in the reduction but has also joined growing calls for the use of body-worn cameras.
Speaking at the PNP’s East Central St. Catherine campaign rally on Sunday evening, Golding said the police are doing good work but stressed the need for greater accountability.
His remarks come amid concerns about the number of fatal police shootings.
According to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), 111 people have been fatally shot by members of the security forces since the start of the year.
Human rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) staged a peaceful protest in St. Andrew last week, also calling for the implementation of body-worn cameras.
Mr. Golding also told supporters that a future PNP administration would focus on tackling both crime and corruption.
