Reggae Girlz Rally to Secure 3-2 Victory and Series Sweep Over South Africa
South Africa’s early dominance was not enough to stave off a determined comeback from Jamaica, as the Reggae Girlz secured a 3-2 victory at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday to sweep their two-game friendly international series.
Linda Mothalo gave the visitors a deserved lead in the 20th minute, firing past teenaged goalkeeper Liya Brooks.
Despite a subdued first-half performance, Jamaica returned with renewed energy after the break, fuelled by two key substitutions.
Tottenham midfielder Drew Spence emerged as the catalyst for the turnaround, playing a pivotal role in all three of Jamaica’s goals.
In the 59th minute, Spence recovered the ball deep in South Africa’s half, setting up defender Vyan Sampson, who scored on her second attempt to register her first international goal.
Just five minutes later, Spence herself got on the scoresheet, heading powerfully past goalkeeper Kaylin Swart to give Jamaica the lead.
Swart responded moments later with a brilliant save, denying Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw a potential goal after the forward broke free from two defenders.
Substitute Kayla McKenna sealed Jamaica’s victory with a well-taken goal in the latter stages, beating the South African defence and firing past Swart from close range. A late error by Brooks allowed Nicole Michael to capitalise and reduce the deficit, but it was too late for South Africa to avoid defeat.
The win followed Jamaica’s 3-0 triumph in the first match, highlighting the team’s resilience and tactical adjustments across the series.
