UEFA Opens Investigation After Khadija Shaw Hit by Object During Women’s Champions League Match
UEFA has opened a formal investigation following an incident involving Reggae Girlz captain Khadija Shaw during Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Hammarby IF in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday.
Shaw, who had opened the scoring for City in the first half, was celebrating in front of home fans in Stockholm when replays appeared to show her flinching after an object was thrown onto the pitch.
The 27-year-old striker was quickly escorted away by her City team-mates. Despite the disruption, referee Silvia Gasperotti issued Shaw a yellow card for unsporting conduct after her goal celebration.
UEFA confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been launched against Hammarby IF for the throwing of objects, citing Article 16(2)(b) of the Disciplinary Regulations.
Manchester City, however, remained focused on the match and secured a 2-1 victory, with Shaw scoring again after half-time to help her team clinch a place in the quarter-finals with two group-stage matches still to play. Shaw’s brace brought her tally to 12 goals in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.
In addition to her club success, Shaw was named to the Jamaica national team for the upcoming friendly internationals against South Africa later this month.
