Severe Weather Alert in Effect for Jamaica as Likelihood of Tropical Depression or Storm Development Increases

Jamaica is under a severe weather alert as an area of low pressure over the southern Caribbean is expected to develop and move closer to the island.

The alert, issued by the Meteorological Service, will remain in effect until 5 p.m. on Monday, November 4.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Met Service reported that the broad area of disturbed weather is situated across the south-western Caribbean Sea, just north of Panama.

Forecasts indicate that this low-pressure system will gradually move northward and then north-westward over the next 24 to 36 hours.

With a high likelihood of developing into a tropical cyclone, projections suggest that the system may become a tropical depression or tropical storm south of Jamaica by Monday morning.

It is expected to pass east and then north of the island by Tuesday.

Regardless of its level of development, the Met Service warns that the system will bring unstable weather to Jamaica starting Sunday night through Wednesday evening.

The forecast includes cloudy conditions, periods of heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds, particularly affecting eastern and south-central parishes.

The advisory also urges fishers on the cays and banks to prepare for possible evacuation if needed. The Met Service assured that it will continue to monitor the system closely.
