New Negril International Airport to Be Built in Little London
The location for the long-awaited Negril International Airport was revealed at the #Thropx2024 Investment Conference, marking a significant step in the development of the western region’s air travel infrastructure.
The new airport will be built on land in Little London, a site 20-25 minutes away from the popular Seven Mile Beach area.
The announcement follows a previous declaration by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and builds on plans for an international airport in the resort town, which were first unveiled in October 2023.
At the conference, Horace Bryson, Senior Director of Engineering Maintenance and Projects at the Airport Authority of Jamaica (AAJ), outlined the government’s vision for the airport.
The development is expected to create thousands of jobs for locals and help alleviate the growing pressures on Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, particularly as tourism in the region continues to expand.
In line with the government’s strategy, the Negril International Airport will be constructed at the existing domestic Negril Aerodrome site.
The AAJ has been tasked with overseeing the project, which is set to begin no later than March 2025. Although the exact timeline remains uncertain, the construction is expected to take approximately 12 to 18 months after government approval.
In addition to the new airport, the existing Negril Aerodrome will remain operational and undergo improvements, including runway extensions.
The development of the Little London site, which is leased by the government, is poised to increase the region’s economic activity. As Bryson noted, the establishment of an airport tends to drive up land costs and attracts further investment in surrounding areas, creating a ripple effect across the local economy.
The proposed Negril International Airport is expected to complement existing facilities in Kingston, Montego Bay, and Boscobel, enhancing Jamaica’s overall air travel capacity and strengthening its position as a key global tourism destination.
