Caribbean Nations on Alert as Powerful Hurricane Kirk Approaches
Several Caribbean nations have been placed on alert as Hurricane Kirk, a powerful and expansive storm, advances through the region.
According to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami, the hurricane, which is currently located 1010 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, is carrying winds that reach up to 145 mph.
Although no coastal warnings or advisories have been issued at this time, Kirk is progressing northwest at a speed of around 10 mph.
Meteorologists predict this movement will continue throughout Friday, with a shift toward a faster, northward direction expected over the weekend.
Currently classified as a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Hurricane Kirk may experience minor changes in intensity today. However, the NHC anticipates gradual weakening starting on Saturday and extending into the early part of the following week.
The effects of the hurricane are already being felt, as swells generated by Kirk are moving westward and will likely impact the Leeward Islands by the end of the day. By Saturday, these swells are expected to affect Bermuda and the Greater Antilles, followed by the east coast of the United States, Atlantic Canada, and the Bahamas on Sunday.
The NHC has cautioned that these conditions could result in dangerous surf and rip currents.
In addition to monitoring Hurricane Kirk, forecasters are also keeping a close watch on Tropical Storm Leslie, which is situated 645 miles west southwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. Leslie has sustained winds of 60 mph.
