Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has achieved a significant academic milestone, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Law and Policy from Northeastern University in Boston.

Dr. Holness began his studies online shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, delving into issues that have long affected Jamaican society.

His doctoral thesis focused on the impact of United States gun laws on violence in Jamaica, highlighting key factors contributing to the country’s ongoing struggles with crime.

Among these factors, he pointed to loose gun laws and active participation in violent acts as major contributors to the rise in violence over the years.

This achievement makes Dr. Holness the first Jamaican Prime Minister to earn a doctorate, which he described as a lifelong goal.

He is set to officially graduate in June of next year.

The Prime Minister’s academic journey adds another notable chapter to his career, blending his political leadership with advanced academic research in a critical area affecting the country.
