New Reggae Boyz Coach Steve McClaren to Be Unveiled Today

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is set to unveil Steve McClaren as the new head coach of the Senior Reggae Boyz in a press conference today at the Federation’s headquarters in New Kingston.

McClaren’s appointment follows the resignation of former coach Heimir Hallgrímsson after the Reggae Boyz’s disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa América tournament held in the United States this past June.

The JFF Board of Directors officially signed off on McClaren’s appointment last week, bringing in the experienced English coach to lead the national team into a new era.

JFF President Michael Ricketts expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “We are looking forward to a fruitful relationship with Steve.

His vast experience at both the club and international levels will be invaluable as we strive to elevate the Reggae Boyz to new heights.”

Steve McClaren brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed top-tier English clubs and the England national team.

His notable achievements include leading Middlesbrough to victory in the 2004 League Cup and guiding the team to the UEFA Cup final in 2006. More recently, McClaren served as an assistant coach at Manchester United, working under Erik ten Hag since 2022.

However, McClaren’s tenure as England’s head coach from 2006 to 2007 is remembered for its abrupt end after the team failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Despite this setback, his extensive knowledge and experience in football management make him a promising candidate to guide the Reggae Boyz.

McClaren’s first challenge as head coach will come soon, as the Reggae Boyz face Caribbean neighbors Cuba in the Concacaf Nations League on September 6 at the National Stadium in Kingston.

This match will be a crucial test as McClaren begins his journey with Jamaica, aiming to rebuild and strengthen the team’s international standing.
