Mason Greenwood Shines on Marseille Debut, Jamaica Fans Eager for National Team Call-Up

Mason Greenwood made an electrifying start to his Ligue 1 career, scoring a brace in Marseille’s 5-1 demolition of Brest on Saturday.

The 22-year-old forward, who joined the French club permanently last month after a season-long loan at Getafe, quickly made an impact by netting his first goal just three minutes into the match.

He added a second from the penalty spot shortly after the half-hour mark, becoming only the third player this century to score twice on his Ligue 1 debut for Marseille, following in the footsteps of Dimitri Payet (2013) and Luis Suarez (2022).

Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille’s new head coach, was full of praise for Greenwood after the game.

“Mason Greenwood is a player who is different from the others; he has an extraordinary level,” De Zerbi said in a post-match interview.

“I am happy that he scored. This will calm the controversies that surrounded his arrival.”

Greenwood’s performance was part of a comprehensive victory for Marseille, with Luis Henrique also scoring twice, and Elye Wahi sealing the win with a penalty.

De Zerbi, who was brought in to improve Marseille’s disappointing eighth-place finish last season, expressed satisfaction with his team’s strong start.

“I’m happy. We started from a long way back, we had to rebuild a team. It gave me satisfaction, especially in the second half where the team showed mental strength to go for the victory,” the 45-year-old Italian coach said.

Greenwood’s debut has reignited calls from Jamaican football fans for him to don the Reggae Boyz jersey.

The forward, who has Jamaican heritage, has long been a player of interest for the Caribbean nation.

With his standout performance in France, the anticipation for a potential call-up to Jamaica’s national team has only grown, as fans hope to see Greenwood bring his talents to the international stage.

Jamaican fans took to social media to express their excitement and hope.

One commenter urged, “Come home Greenwood, come home!”

Another fan expressed their anticipation, stating, “Jamaican talent, can’t wait for you to join the squad. I’m going to speak it into being.”
