Deployment of Jamaican Troops to Haiti on Hold Amid Hurricane Beryl Recovery Efforts

The deployment of Jamaican troops to Haiti has been delayed due to ongoing recovery efforts in Jamaica following Hurricane Beryl.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness previously announced that the government was awaiting the completion of resource finalisations and agreements for the deployment of troops as part of a multinational security mission to Haiti.

Jamaica, along with several other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations, had agreed to participate in the mission.

A joint training exercise, involving 300 personnel from Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Belize, was conducted on the island between March and April in preparation for the mission.

However, Information Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon indicated that no deployment date has been set, as the Jamaica Defence Force’s primary focus remains on domestic efforts.

She highlighted that the force is currently aiding in Jamaica’s rebuilding efforts.

Dr. Morris Dixon added that the government would reevaluate in the coming months to determine if resources are available for deployment abroad.
