Alana Reid Powers to Gold in 100m at World Athletics U20 Championships
Alana Reid delivered a stellar performance in the girls’ 100m final at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, securing Jamaica’s first gold medal of the competition.
Reid, a former Hydel High School standout and the current world leader, clocked 11.17 seconds to cement her status as the world U20 champion.
Reid’s triumph marked a significant milestone for Jamaica, as she continued the nation’s legacy in the event.
This victory is Jamaica’s fourth consecutive gold in the girls’ 100m at the World U20 Championships, following the successes of Briana Williams in 2018, Tina Clayton in 2021, and Clayton’s repeat win in 2022.
The race also saw a strong Caribbean presence on the podium. Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands captured the silver medal with a time of 11.27 seconds, while Kishawna Niles of Barbados earned the bronze, finishing in 11.37 seconds.
With this victory, Jamaica now holds a place in a four-way tie for fifth on the medal table, thanks to Reid’s solitary gold.
The Jamaican team is aiming to replicate their outstanding performance from the 2022 championships in Cali, Colombia, where they amassed a total of 16 medals, including 6 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze.
