Vybz Kartel and Co-Accused Freed!

Dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, and his co-accused were set free on Wednesday after the Court of Appeal ruled against retrying them for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The judgement was delivered by a three-judge panel consisting of Justices Marva McDonald-Bishop, Paulette Williams, and David Fraser.

The highly anticipated ruling was preceded by an abbreviated summary to help the public understand the case.

The full judgement is to be made available on the official website of the Court of Appeal at www.courtofappeal.gov.jm.

Vybz Kartel, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, had been convicted in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Williams.

Despite an appeal to the local Court of Appeal in 2020, their convictions were initially upheld.

The accused later took their appeal to the United Kingdom-based Privy Council.

On March 14, 2024, the Privy Council overturned their murder convictions due to juror misconduct, sending the case back to the Jamaica Court of Appeal to determine whether a retrial was warranted.

Today’s decision concludes a long and contentious legal battle, bringing relief to the accused and their supporters.
