Ruling on Vybz Kartel and Co-Appellants’ Release Expected Today
The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its ruling today regarding the habeas corpus application filed on behalf of dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, and his co-appellants Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell and Aundre St. John.
This follows the proceedings held yesterday, where both the defence and the prosecution presented their arguments.
The habeas corpus application was initially filed on 13th May, but was adjourned due to insufficient time for consideration.
The ruling comes in the wake of a significant decision by the Privy Council on 14th March, which quashed the murder convictions of Palmer, Campbell, and St. John. The Privy Council’s ruling mandated that the case be returned to Jamaica’s Appeal Court to determine whether a retrial is warranted.
The three men, along with co-defendant Kahira Jones, were originally convicted in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. This case has been closely watched by the public and has significant implications for the Jamaican justice system.
During yesterday’s court session, arguments were presented by the defence and the prosecution.
This case has garnered extensive media attention, not only due to Vybz Kartel’s fame in the dancehall music scene but also because of the legal precedents it may set.
The ruling today will determine whether Kartel, Campbell, and St. John will be released or if they will face further legal proceedings.
