Farquharson Leads Jamaican Sweep in Men’s 800m at Tom Jones Memorial
On Saturday Kimar Farquharson of Texas A&M led a dominant Jamaican performance in the men’s 800 meters at the 2024 Tom Jones Memorial, held at the Percy Beard Track in Gainesville, Florida.
Farquharson, a junior athlete, crossed the finish line with a stellar time of 1:46.69, securing the top position in the event.
Following closely behind, Navasky Anderson, Jamaica’s national record holder, maintained a strong pace, finishing in second place with a time of 1:46.76.
Tarees Rhoden, representing Clemson University, completed the historic 1-2-3 sweep for Jamaica, securing the third spot with a time of 1:46.82.
Meanwhile, in the women’s equivalent, Vincentian star Shafiqua Maloney clinched the top position with a time of 1:59.97.
Maloney’s impressive performance was followed by Clemson’s Gladys Chepngetich, who secured second place with a time of 2:00.53, and Houston’s Kelly-Ann Beckford, who finished third with a time of 2:00.70.
In other events, Jamaica’s Stacey Ann Williams secured second place with a commendable time of 50.71.
The event was won by American Alexis Holmes in 50.65, with Britton Wilson claiming third place with a time of 50.74.
Adding to Jamaica’s strong presence, Clemson junior Marie Forbes delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s discus invite, achieving a personal best throw of 58.31m, earning her second place.
