Vybz Kartel’s Legal Team Pursues Bail After Privy Council Quashes Conviction
Following the decision by the Privy Council to overturn the murder convictions of Dancehall Entertainer, Adidja “Vybz Kartel” Palmer, Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, their legal representatives have announced intentions to seek bail promptly.
In its ruling yesterday, the Privy Council cited juror misconduct as grounds for quashing the convictions.
Palmer, Jones, St. John, and Campbell had been found guilty of the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams a decade ago, back in March 2014.
Their legal team had brought the case before the Privy Council, citing issues with evidence and other factors.
Following the verdict yesterday, the lawyers emphasised the lengthy incarceration of the four men and expressed a desire to reintegrate them into society swiftly.
“We are not interested in a retrial,” stated the attorneys representing Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants.
The Privy Council’s decision instructed the matter to return to the local court in Jamaica for consideration of a retrial.
Expressing gratitude for the quashed convictions, Bert Samuels, representing Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, argued against a retrial, citing its potential adverse effects on his client.
The immediate focus now shifts to seeking bail for the four men while awaiting a decision on retrial.
In a separate statement, Law Lord Lloyd Jones of the UK Privy Council detailed the reasons behind the ruling, highlighting the trial judge’s inaction regarding a bribery attempt and failure to consider its impact on other jurors.
