Vybz Kartel and Co-Convicts: Convictions Overturned
A short while ago, the Privy Council, based in the UK, directed Jamaica’s Court of Appeal to assess whether Vybz Kartel, a prominent figure in the dancehall scene, and his three associates should receive a new trial.
This decision comes after the overturning of their 2014 murder convictions by all five judges in Jamaica’s highest appellate court.
Kartel, born Adijah Palmer, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, had lodged an appeal against their imprisonment for the murder of Clive Lizard Williams in 2011, placing their hopes on this final avenue of appeal in London.
The Privy Council’s ruling declared that due to significant irregularities, there should be contemplation of a retrial.
While this marks a partial victory for Kartel and his co-convicts, as they had hoped for complete exoneration, the decision for a reconsideration of the case stands.
The panel of judges overseeing the appeal included Lord Reed, Lord Lloyd Jones, Lord Briggs, Lord Borrows, and Lady Simler.
