“I Would Love to Have Him in My Team”, Reggae Boyz Coach Expresses Desire for Mason Greenwood
Heimer Hallgrimsson, the coach of the Reggae Boyz, has publicly expressed his interest in inviting Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood to join Jamaica’s national football team.
This development comes amidst speculation surrounding Greenwood’s international future, particularly given the limited prospects for an England call-up ahead of Euro 2024.
Greenwood, who is now on loan at Getafe, has found himself on the fringes of international selection after earning a solitary cap for England against Iceland in September 2020.
Manchester United’s decision to loan him out followed the dropping of charges, including attempted rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.
Greenwood has consistently denied these allegations.
With eligibility to play for Jamaica through his father, Andrew, Greenwood’s potential representation for the island has sparked widespread discussion.
Reports suggest that the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) is receptive to the idea.
During a recent CONCACAF Nations League press conference in Dallas, Hallgrimsson said:
“I would love to have him in my team. Like all coaches, I would like to have the best players in our team, but it’s always up to the player himself if he wants to do it”.
Jamaica will face the USA on March 21, 2024.
